Creating a Quick Launch Bar in Windows
How to set up a Windows Quick Launch Bar to open your most-used files and programs faster.
The Quick Launch Bar is a convenient way to access frequently used applications without cluttering your desktop. You can add any application or file shortcut by dragging and dropping its icon onto the bar.
Adding Applications
- Drag any desktop icon onto the Quick Launch Bar to add it.
- You can also drag icons from the Start Menu or All Programs list directly to the bar.
Expanding the Bar
If you need more space for additional icons:
- Right-click on the Quick Launch Bar (not on an icon) and click Lock the Taskbar to unlock it.
- Drag the edge of the bar to expand it.
- Right-click again and select Lock the Taskbar to lock it back in place.
Removing Icons
Right-click any icon on the bar and choose Delete. This removes only the shortcut — it does not uninstall the application. To uninstall software, use Control Panel → Programs.
Windows 7 and Later
Windows 7 and later versions do not include a Quick Launch Bar by default. You need to add it manually. Microsoft's support page has full instructions for enabling it.
